The UFC with all it’s mainstream success completely changed the fortunes of the sport of MMA. The UFC has arguably always been the premier and the biggest MMA promotion in the world, while “The Notorious” Conor McGregor has been the biggest superstar in both the UFC as well as MMA’s history.

McGregor has become the epitome of how to succeed and make it big as a fighter. He is charismatic and possesses the gift of gab, but most importantly he also backs up all his trash-talk and banter with solid performances inside the octagon. Many fighters such as Colby Covington and Kevin Lee often seem inspired by “Mystic Mac”. Hence, on the occasion of the 30th birthday of the UFC’s first “champ champ”, we at MMA India have decided to take a look back at ten of his greatest moments.

“Surprise, surprise motherfuckers. The King is back!” – after defeating Diaz in a rematch at UFC 202

At UFC 196, Nate Diaz shocked the world by submitting McGregor in the second round. Diaz who was a heavy betting underdog before the fight, clearly had full confidence that he will win the fight though. Thus, after winning the fight against the Irishman, Diaz had famously said, “I’m not surprised motherfuckers”.

When the tables turned at UFC 202 and McGregor defeated Diaz, he sarcastically mocked his bitter rival and made the statement.

Humble in victory and humble in defeat – after getting choked out by Nate Diaz at UFC 196

Conor McGregor carries around the persona of a trash-talker who is brash, arrogant and doesn’t his opponents. However, many of his admirers had noticed that McGregor was always humble and respectful to his opponents after the fight. He was humble in all his victories and even when he did lose against Diaz. He took the loss like a true champion and was humble and even praised Diaz’s efficiency.

“I would like to take this opportunity to apologise to absolutely nobody” – after knocking Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205

What makes any joke, comeback or one-liner funny and perfect? Impeccable timing and unpredictability.

This famous quote by “The Notorious” had both impeccable timing and delivery and the unpredictability. This post-fight interview was simply one of the best examples of Mystic Mac’s magic on the mic.

Taking Aldo’s belt in the Dublin leg of the UFC 189 world tour

UFC 189 was initially supposed to be headlined by a title fight between Jose Aldo and Conor McGregor. At the UFC 189 World Tour press conference in Dublin, Aldo claimed to be the king of Dublin, the Irish superstar though tricked him and as Aldo carelessly kept his feet on the table, McGregor got up and took his belt away leaving the champion back then completely red-faced.

“You can call me Mystic Mac because I predict these things”

“The Notorious” fought Dustin Poirier at UFC 178. Both fighters had been involved in a lot of trash-talking and McGregor had predicted that he would knock Poirier out in the first round. Even though he was carrying a ligament injury into the fight, McGregor still knocked Poirier out in the first round. He then went on to state how he could predict things and became the now famous, “Mystic Mac”.

“Dana, 60 Gs baby!!” after his first fight against Marcus Brimmage

McGregor had made his UFC debut against Marcus Brimmage at UFC Sweden 2. After winning his debut fight via TKO in the very first round, McGregor had called-out UFC President Dana White to reward him with the Knockout of the Night bonus award.

“I can rest my balls on your forehead” to Chad Mendes

This one is pure gold and McGregor at his savage best.

Calling out T.J. Dillashaw for being a ‘snake in the grass’

“Mystic Mac” strikes again! McGregor had warned Urijah Faber that UFC bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw will leave Team Alpha Male to train with Duane Ludwig and had called him a “snake in the grass”. Faber had dismissed McGregor’s accusations, though later they did turn out to be true as Dillashaw left the camp to train with Ludwig.

“We’re not here to take part, we’re here to take over”

This is easily Conor McGregor’s most popular quote, arguably his greatest quote as well. After defeating Diego Brandao in a “Performance of the Night” performance, McGregor again went on to deliver a marvellous post-fight interview. At the event not just McGregor but three of his teammates were victorious as well. He claimed that it was a clean sweep for the Irish and then went on to claim that they weren’t there to take part, but to take over.

Aldo knockout in 13 seconds

Is there a bigger and better Conor McGregor moment than this? We don’t think so.

Aldo was undefeated for around a decade back then and had been of the most dominant champions in the history of the sport. He was highly feared and was the pound-for-pound kingpin as well. However, McGregor shattered the myth of Aldo’s invincibility and made a man once considered God look like a mere mortal.

He did exactly what he said he was going to and it just took him 13 seconds to achieve it. Simply brilliant!
