UFC: Robbie Lawler vs. Stephen Thompson targeted for January UFC event on ESPN

It looks like the very first card for UFC on ESPN will be featuring welterweight contenders Robbie Lawler vs. Stephen Thompson and the fight is scheduled to take place on January,18 of  2019.

Although, The bout is yet to be finalized, as Lawler, who is recovering from an ACL injury, is waiting for clearance from his doctor to return to training.

Stephen Thompson last fought Darren Till at UFC Liverpool despite till being overweight by 3.5 pounds to which Dana White said he owned Thompon a favor. Although Wonderboy lost the fight on judges scorecard, it was close enough for the bout to be favored to either fighter.

Robbie Lawler (28-12 MMA) has not competed inside the octagon since suffering a lopsided loss to former lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos at UFC on FOX 26 in Winnipeg.

Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson has been calling for a fight with Lawler for several years, and it finally looks like the bout might come to fruition

Thompson also revealed last month about his interest on fighting Lawler:

“With Robbie Lawler, he’s coming off of a knee injury,” Thompson said. “I was just thinking, Robbie Lawler’s out for a little bit. I might be out for a little bit. Let’s call for Robbie Lawler and maybe the timing will be fairly right.”

Thompson has gone 7-2-1 over his past ten fights.
