Bellator is definitely not lagging behind the UFC in producing big cards as they have a electrifying card put up with MMA legend Mirko ‘Cro Cop’ Filipovic (36-11-2) making his Bellator debut against Roy Nelson (23-15 MMA, 1-1 BMMA).
When Roy Nelson spoke with MMA Junkie about his Bellator 200 bout with Mirko Cro Cop a few weeks ago, it hadn’t been officially determined whether it would serve as an alternative bout for the promotion’s ongoing heavyweight grand prix.
Nelson however was already speculating a revenge trilogy against the man who removed him from the tournament.
Bellator President Scott Coker later confirmed that the bout will serve as an alternative for the heavyweight grand Prix. The winner would chip in as a replacement if any of the four remaining participants get injured.
“Any time you can get back into title contention, it’s always nice,” Nelson said Thursday during a conference call. “But I just want to get through Mirko and then if we can get a chance to fight Matt Mitrione again, that’s pretty much where I’m kind of looking. And then whoever has the belt, those are my two agendas.”
Nelson and Mitrione first met back in 2012 when they were still fighting under the UFC banner. Nelson won the fight via TKO in the first round. Under the Bellator banner, Mitrione avenged his loss by defeating Nelson via unanimous decision. There was a lot bad blood going into the fight. Mitrione accused Nelson of using performance enhancing drugs and Nelson responded by making it personal. The beef still doesn’t seem to be sorted.
“He’s just a guy that I’m actually – I really am disgusted with,” Nelson said. “So that’s a guy who I actually really want to punch in the face. Everybody else, I just want to punch in the face because I get paid. He, I just want to punch up his face for free.”
Nelson as of now has to get past through Mirko Cro Cop.
