‘Shogun’ Rua suffered probably the most brutal loss in his career last night at the hands of up-and-comer Anthony ‘Lionheart’ Smith.

‘Shogun’ was on a 3-fight win streak prior to the fight and a win would have potentially set up a title fight with ‘champ champ’ Daniel Cormier. But, as most things in life, things don’t always go the way we want it.

Anthony Smith stopped ‘Shogun’ in the 2nd minute of their fight after a flurry that ended with a brutal standing elbow that left ‘Shogun’ motionless on his feet.

‘Shogun’ as classy as always posted a very emotional message on his Instagram feed to congratulate his opponent.

Unfortunately we don’t always get the result we want, and to understand that is part of life. Congratulations to Anthony Smith. For so many times I was celebrating at this moment and I can’t take his merits from him. I dedicated myself, trained hard, and did all that was within my reach for this fight, but he was better yesterday. Life continues, thank you all for the support.

That might have been the last chance at gold for the former Pride GP champion and former UFC LHW champion, but ‘Shogun’ lived up to his nickname and went out on his sword.
