In a recent interview on Submission Radio, Colby Covington shared his memories of first meeting and training with Alex Pereira, revealing insights into their early interactions and the Brazilian’s transition from kickboxing to MMA.
Covington recalled meeting Pereira about seven or eight years ago when Pereira was still competing in Glory Kickboxing. At the time, Covington was a member of American Top Team and had a close friendship with Glover Teixeira, who brought Pereira in to work on his wrestling. Covington noted that Pereira was eager to learn and improve his skills, showing a clear intention to transition to MMA.
Covington praised Pereira’s dedication and eagerness to learn, highlighting his respect for the Brazilian fighter. “He knew he was gonna get into MMA at that time when he was kickboxing,” Covington said. “I was helping with wrestling for a little bit and I respect the guy.”

Despite being a polarizing figure in MMA, Covington has always shown admiration for Pereira’s accomplishments. He lauded Alex Pereira’s rapid rise in the UFC, noting his impressive performances and ability to save cards on short notice. “There’s no way you can’t be impressed with the body of work that Alex has done,” Covington said.
Covington also discussed the possibility of Pereira facing Jon Jones, predicting that Pereira’s lethal left hook and kicks could pose a serious threat to the reigning heavyweight champion. “For sure [Pereira could knock out Jones], he could definitely catch him,” Covington stated.
