As per as Ariel Helwani, a heavyweight fight between Former two time Heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez and former title challenger Francis Ngannou is on the works for UFC on ESPN 1 event to be held at Phoenix,Arizona on 17th of February,2019.
The fight marks the much anticipated return of Velasquez almost after two and a half years since his last bout with Travis Browne on UFC 200 on July 2016 which he won via TKO.Velasquez will be looking forward for an overwhelming victory against Ngannou to make him viable for a title shot at the heavyweight. Its also very likely that Cormier, the current heavyweight champ would retire next year thereby vacating the belt.Cormier and Velasquez happen to be teammates at the American Kickboxing Academy and have expressed their views before on not fighting each other inside the octagon.
Cain’s career had been compromised in the UFC because of training related injuries .He was two and half year away from the sport nursing various ailments. He was last scheduled to fight Werdum at UFC 207 on December of 2016 but the Athletic Commission didn’t allow him to compete as he was unfit due to bone spurs in his back.
There was also a lot of talk regarding Cain’s contract negotiations with the UFC but it currently looks all good with the veteran making a comeback against Francis Ngannou.Ngannou was shattered last January when he lost via unanimous decision to then champion Stipe Miocic after getting through a string of notable knockout victories over Andrei Arlovski,Overeem and other contenders. The shattering in confidence took a long hit as Ngannou even performed poorly against Derrick Lewis this July where he and Lewis made a record of throwing least shots against each other and which ultimately the Cameroonian lost via decision.Just when everything was looking shaky for Ngannou,he bounced back with a 45 second knockout victory over fellow contender Curtis Blaydes at UFC Fight Night 141 last month at Beijing.
The highly anticipated event would be a clash of styles as Ngannou has demonic power in his hands to have a single punch knockout victory while Cain is known for mixing up things with his high volume striking, wrestling and has tremendous pace, cardio and conditioning to back it up.
The following news regarding the probable scheduling of the possible fight came up this morning from a tweet by ESPN correspondent Ariel Helwani.
