UFC 228 featured an interesting matchup as welterweight champ Tyron ‘The Chosen One’ Woodley made his return to take on Darren ‘The Gorilla’ Till.
What was thought to be an exciting matchup turned out to be an extremely lopsided second round submission victory for champ Tyron Woodley. Woodley rocked Till on the feet was chocked him on the ground courtesy of a beautiful D’Arce choke to hand Till the first loss of his professional career.
However in an emotional moment, Tyron Woodley’s coach, part of American Top Team, Din Thomas handed Woodley his black belt which reduced the welterweight champ into tears.
When asked about it on Twitter, Thomas said he was completely confident that Woodley would finish the fight using Jiu-Jitsu. However, Thomas said he wasn’t anticipating a D’Arce choke. (via Twitter):
Yes. I was completely confident Tyron would finish using Jiu-Jitsu. That wasn't the sub I anticipated but Ill take it. https://t.co/HyNBTGW8il

“To get a black belt from Din, after everything we’ve been through. It meant a lot to me,” Woodley said about the promotion. “I just remember walking out to the cage, and I gave him a hug. I was like ‘man, we’re doing it. We’ve been at this for a long time.’ I remember my eyes kind of getting a little watery, because this dude has been with me for a long long time. So when he put the black belt on me, it definitely, emotionally, made it a little more rewarding.
“I was going to win that anyway,” he said of the UFC belt. “This (black belt) was a surprise.”
