Losing is part and parcel of any sport, and MMA is no exception. However, the string of losses that BJ Penn has seen throughout the past 9 years has paved way for a situation that has never been witnessed before.

The Hawaiian native’s latest defeat came at the hands of Clay Guida at UFC 237. Following the same, people have now began to question as to why Penn is still on the roster given his dismal performances. Not only that, people are also questioning about how the UFC can allow a fighter who has charges of domestic violence and an impending police investigation against him to compete as if nothing has happened.

UFC Senior Vice President International and Content, David Shaw addressed the latter by arguing that it was a matter of innocent until proven guilty.

“I think until there’s some sort of conclusion reached on that situation, and there’s information that comes to the forefront, I think that he’ll continue to have a plan to fight,” said Shaw during the UFC 237 post-fight news conference at Jeunesse Arena.

Even if the aforesaid matter is kept aside, how can one forget the fact that the former two decision champ’s record has dropped to below .500 in his UFC tenure.

“Now, I’m not sure having lost this fight, not having won one since 2010, that’s a pretty big skid,” Shaw said. “I’m not sure what he wants to do with his career. It’s something that next week we’ll try to figure out what the next step is, but at this point I don’t really know what that means.”
