A neck to neck contest inside the Octagon, on the heels of a dramatic week leading up to the fight, ended in Marvin Vettori (18-5-1 MMA, 8-3-1 UFC) coming up on top as the winner over Paulo Costa (13-2 MMA, 5-2 UFC) in the main event of UFC Vegas 41 at the UFC Apex this Saturday. Bouncing back from a defeat against reigning UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya, Vettori achieved a victory via unanimous decision over his fellow former middleweight title contender, but the fight was a light heavyweight contents instead of middleweight due to Costa being unable to cut weight to 185.
With pressing on Costa right from the first round, Vettori went on the offensive with combination strikes, while his Brazilian opposition returning with heavy hands as well as head kicks. However, Vettori was still in the better position throughout the fight, keeping Costa to the cage, who even suffered a point deduction early in the second round after poking Vettori in the eye.
The fight progressed with Vettori starting to include takedowns in his offensive approach going into the third, and Costa himself returned with a takedown followed by a guillotine choke attempt but was seemingly exhausted possibly due to fighting in a higher weight class, with Vettori taking full advantage of it.
The Italian was able to absorb all of Borrachinha’s punches, taking the fight to the distance. At the end of the fifth round, the judges scored the contest 48-46 across the board, with the early point deduction being a setback for Costa.
“He should have made weight, you know,” said Vettori following his hard fought win, “He should respect all of us. But I get to buy myself another watch with this money. I still got the win and I’m proud of it.” [H/T CBS Sports]
Costa, who was undefeated up until facing Adesanya at UFC 253 last year, is now on a two fight losing streak. Meanwhile, Vettori has improved his record to 7-2-1 in his last ten fights, and given that the number five ranked UFC middleweight made a stunning light heavyweight debut, it is to see if Vettori will be seen fighting in the higher weight class again.
