Former UFC contender Ben Askren has shared his perspective on the recent facial laceration sustained by Merab Dvalishvili. The injury, which Dvalishvili revealed on social media, raised concerns about his upcoming bantamweight title fight against Sean O’Malley at UFC 306. However, Dana White’s reaction to the situation has sparked debate within the MMA community.
Dvalishvili’s management team assured fans that the injury was minor and wouldn’t affect his participation in the fight. Despite these reassurances, White expressed frustration with the fighter for posting about the injury online. He criticized Dvalishvili’s decision, leading to a heated discussion.
Appearing in an interview with Daniel Cormier, Ben Askren downplayed the significance of the cut. He stated, “We’re 18 days away from the fight still, and so he has 18 days left to heal, and the stitches are already out. I think it’s a non-issue. I think Dana overreacted last week a little bit to that. And yeah, I think Merab is gonna be fine; it’s gonna be a non-issue.” Askren’s perspective highlights the timeline for recovery and suggests that White’s reaction may have been excessive.
Dana White’s Beef With Merab Dvalishvilli
Dana White’s frustration escalated when Dvalishvili posted a video of himself removing stitches from the facial laceration. While acknowledging that he trusts Dvalishvili’s judgment, White couldn’t help but express disbelief at the fighter’s unorthodox approach to wound care. He quipped, “Isn’t he awesome? I think he’s just f*cking with me now, to be honest with you.” White’s concern shifted from the injury itself to Dvalishvili’s unconventional actions.
