With the division warming up, every bout would certainly be a pivotal one. On May 12, 2018 at UFC 224 in Rio de Janeiro, former lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos meets Colby Covington for the interim welterweight title. A week later, Kamaru Usman takes on south-american stand out Santiago Ponzinibbio in Chile. Again in a week, former two-time welterweight title challenger Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson enters enemy territory to take on promising scouser Darren Till. In June, Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone takes on British Leon Edwards in Singapore. Hence, the welterweight division fans are in for a treat. The winner of Medeiros vs Perry would certainly move up the rankings as potential opponent for the above mentioned fighters.

Medeiros was a staple in UFC’s lightweight division training with the most notable names of the game in Diaz brothers, Gilbert Melendez, Jake Shields and now with UFC Featherweight champion Max Holloway. However, due to massive weight cut, Medeiros was unable to fight at his full potential. Since moving to welterweight, Medeiros has stacked up an impressive record of 3-1, with all three of his victories being finishes. In his third outing at Welterweight, Medeiros faced a stern test in Alex ‘Cowboy’ Oliveira at UFC 218 in December, 2017. The fight went on to be a potential candidate for ‘Fight of the Year’ as Medeiros edged out Oliveira in a back and forth battle. In his last fight, Medeiros faced Donald Cerrone at Austin, Texas in February. He lost the fight via TKO in the first round.

Perry on the other hand, became an instant star after his debut at UFC 202 in August 2016. Since then ‘The Platinum’ has stayed active fighting six times in almost 18 months. Perry secured a record of 4-3 in the UFC. All of his 11 career victories have been finishes. Perry last fought Max Griffin in his hometown of Orlando, Florida in February. Perry lost the fight via unanimous decision.

UFC 226 features a much anticipated super-fight between UFC Heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic and UFC Light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier for the UFC heavyweight strap.
