Brazilian legends Lyoto ‘The Dragon’ Machida(23-8) and Vitor ‘The Phenom’ Belfort(26-13-1NC) are slated to face each other at UFC 224 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on May 12,2018.
This bout between former UFC Light Heavyweight champions is a nostalgia train down the memory lane for long time UFC fans.Be it them knocking out former champions or be it them having wars with other legends, these two Brazilian legends have done it all and without a doubt would be future hall of fame inductees.
Belfort made his debut back at UFC 12 in February 1997 at the age of 19.Belfort’s potential was already known when he literally ran through two heavy dangerous fighters in Tra Telligman and Scott Ferrozzo at UFC 12 Heavyweight Tournament Semifinals and Finals respectively, to become UFC 12 heavyweight champion of the world.Belfort then went on to capture the UFC Heavyweight championship defeating Randy ‘The Natural’ Couture. He then moved to Middleweight and knocked out future champions in Luke Rockhold and Michael Bisping via spinning kick and via head kick. However, Belfort is now looking to put an end to his lustrous career at UFC 224 and Machida is honoured to serve as his opppnent.Machida was a former light heavyweight champion as well.
“This fight, if it’s really his last fight, it’s an honor to be part of this event because it’s a historic moment,” said Machida during the UFC 224 press conference. “He’s a guy that helped build this sport. He’s done a lot for the sport and in Brazil and throughout the world. So to be part of this moment, it’s an honor for me.”
Machida is coming off of a victory against Eryk Anders in February whereas Belfort defeated Nate Marquardt via unanimous decision at UFC 212 in June 2017.
“We’ll put on a show. I believe this fight is good for everyone: me, Vitor, the fans, for everyone. I think that everyone will like to watch this fight, so it’s a good fight for everyone,” he said.
