Valentina Shevchenko vs. Amanda Nunes trilogy fight makes sense according to Dana White

UFC flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko could get a chance to fight two-division UFC Champion Amanda Nunes in their trilogy fight according to Dana White.

UFC President Dana White revealed some interesting plans for Valentina who defeated Jennifer Maia at UFC 255. White spoke to TMZ and revealed that he would be open to making a trilogy bout that Shevchenko’s been clamouring for. Chiefly, the bout in question is the third fight against consensus women’s MMA GOAT Amanda Nunes.

Shevchenko, the reigning and defending UFC women’s flyweight champion successfully defended her title at UFC 255. Shevchenko has gone a perfect 6-0 since moving down to 125lbs and looks to hold the belt for a long time.

Shevchenko and Nunes fought twice previously, with Nunes winning both fights by decision. Nunes is currently the UFC women’s bantamweight and featherweight champion. As for Zhang, she is the UFC women’s strawweight champion and will fight Rose Namajunas in her next fight in early 2021. If all of these three champions keep winning their fights, it sure seems like we will see some champion vs. champion fights in 2021.

Dana White is ready to entertain the idea of making the trilogy bout happen. However, fans are always looking for the next big things and both Nunes and Shevchenko are bonafide champions. Not to mention the fact that she did enough to defeat Nunes by the narrowest of margins at UFC 215. The competitive nature is what makes things compelling as the UFC doesn’t book trilogies that are 2-0 for one party.

“Sure. Those two keep cleaning out divisions. It just makes sense to see those two fight again,” White said.

“I don’t know (what’s next). There’s talk about her and Weili Zhang if Weili wins her next fight (against Rose Namajunas). I don’t know.”

Speaking in Spanish on Monday’s episode of Hablemos MMA ‘Bullet’ explained that the third fight with Nunes is “logical”.

“I think it would be logical,” Shevchenko said. “She’s been going through her opponents very easily, and I think that for the future, it would be logical to have a third fight because the second fight … I didn’t lose it. I won it.”

Shevchenko’s confident things would be different in a trilogy bout and she’d finally beat ‘The Lioness’.

This fight right now, as champion vs. champion, I think the judges will have a different outlook towards the fight,” Shevchenko said. “Three years ago in 2017 when we had our fight, they thought that just that one thing gave her the victory, and that was the takedown she got in the fifth round. She didn’t even start it – it was me who initiated. But since it was the final round, we were both slippery. She’s heavier, so I ended on the bottom when I was supposed to land on top.

That’s the only thing that gave her a small advantage in the eyes of the judges that night. But that’s how it went down, and I think it would be very logical to have that third fight between us.”

“To be honest, I don’t know (when I’d like to fight Nunes) and I haven’t thought about it because right now I’m focused on my weight class – 125 pounds,” Shevchenko said. “All I have in mind these days is being dominant and retain my belt again and again, and that’s what I think of when I put thought in my near future. I think if this fight goes down in the future, I would definitely like to have the fans around me and the public back and not in an empty arena.” (Transcribed by MMA Junkie)
