Following her emphatic win over Joanna Jedrzejczyk at UFC 231 for the vacant women’s flyweight championship, Valentina Shevchenko has been keen on defending her title. Although Shevchenko’s performance at UFC 231 may have led her to the belt, the champion is now facing difficulties defending it. Fellow women’s flyweight contender, Jessica Eye, recently showed interest in fighting the UFC flyweight champion Shevchenko in June. After her victory over Katlyn Chookagian on the same UFC 231 card, Eye has been suggesting a championship bout against Valentina Shevchenko for UFC 238, set to take place on June 8th in Chicago.
On 14th February, this past Thursday, Valentina Shevchenko’s manager Roger Allen told MMAJunkie that she is prepared to fight even on a week’s long notice. Shevchenko wishes to defend her belt earlier and explicitly said that waiting isn’t of interest within the Shevchenko camp.
On the other hand, Jessica Eye isn’t particularly inclined towards a short notice fight against an opponent of the caliber of Shevchenko. A turmoil of a very personal account will keep Eye out of the Octagon and Shevchenko may have to accept a challenge outside of this arrangement. Regardless, Valentina Shevchenko is a champion who is seemingly here to stay and is sure to draw big pay-per-view numbers for the UFC.
