While India may have millions of youths pursuing stereotypical jobs, Varun Sanyal sought to follow what was in his blood—to become a warrior. And now, the rising MMA star from the country is set to represent the Tricolor at the upcoming World Championship in the coming week.
I fight because it’s in my blood: Varun Sanyal
Based in London, the welterweight fighter in Varun did not choose mixed martial arts to earn fame, recognition, or money. Instead, he wanted to become a fighter because it was what his ancestors had been doing for centuries, from fighting off invaders to protecting the homeland. And now, Varun wants to follow the same footsteps into the cage.

On X.com, Varun’s mother Smita Barooah shared a post about her son’s upcoming endeavor at the upcoming 2023 IMMAF World Championships, set to take place in Tirana, Albania, from 20th to 25th November. While she herself is not fond of the fight game and even finds it frightening to see Varun choosing it as a career, Mrs. Barooah expressed her complete support for her son.
This is my son @varunsanyal . He's representing India at the #MMA World Championship next week. Seek your blessings.
MMA is something I don't enjoy or understand, & I'm always fearful. But it's what he's chosen to & I'll support him all the way pic.twitter.com/rc9SXpaVII

“My name in Varun Sanyal. I’m a mixed martial arts fighter. I represent the Indian National Team and I’m 7-1,” said Varun in the clip.
“So why I fight? Its because its in my blood. Typically, you see Indians, we’re lawyers, doctors, engineers- the stereotypical jobs. What people forget is that we’re actually warriors at heart. For centuries we had to fight off invaders and protect our homeland, and that’s why I fight. because I feel like I’m going back to my roots and doing what I was born to do,” he added.
Taking place at the Tirana Olympic Park from 20th November onwards, the 2023 IMMAF World Championships will have ten weight classes for male fighters- from Strawweight to Super Heavyweight and six for the female fighters- from Atomweight to Lightweight.
