Indian boxing star Vijender Singh was last seen in action back in November when he fought Charles Adamu (33-14-0) of Ghana at Caesars Palace, Bluewaters DXB. In this fight, Singh knocked down the Ghanian three-times and defeated him via a unanimous decision.

Prior to that, the unbeaten Boxing sensation from Bhiwani was seen in action in July of 2019 at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ, when he took on Mike Snider and defeated him via TKO in the fourth round.

Amidst the COVID-19 outbreak, Vijender Singh hasn’t been able to fight in 2020 and now he hopes to resume action only by October. While boxing shows globally have delayed operations, Singh’s promoter Top Rank has been able to host events including a world title fight for the past one-month at a quarantined bubble in MGM Grand Casino.

Boxing is an easier sport to host during a pandemic: Vijender Singh

In an interview with PTI, Vijender Singh talked about his fighting plans and explained that boxing was fairly an easier sport to organise during a pandemic.

It will be outside India because it is unlikely that restrictions because of Covid-19 pandemic will ease by then. From what I gather, in the next two-three months, I will probably be able to fight,” the 34-year-old said.

That’s the future given the situation. I think that’s how professional boxing will be. Unfortunate but that’s how it will adapt,” said Vijender indicating that Top Rank had shows without any spectator.

First of all, there shouldn’t be a rush. Secondly, you just cannot have crowds. I know they add to the atmosphere but safety first. You have to take every precaution to ensure that this doesn’t spread,” he said.

The post-Covid world would be great for broadcasters and advertisers because there is immense hunger for live sports right now,” he added.

Boxing is easier to conduct in that sense because a very limited number of people are involved in action. They can be tested and kept in a bio-secure zone to ensure that nothing untoward happens.”

Should India start holding sporting events?

While the country is slowly in the phase of easing down restrictions, Vijender Singh urged people to be cautious and take utmost precautions and stated that he is unsure as to when live sports will resume in the country.

India has always been an unpredictable country, one can never be sure how things pan out here,” he laughed.

On a serious note, I would only urge utmost caution before any decision on resuming competitions is taken,” he added. (H/T – INDIA TODAY)
