It has been ten years since Vitor Belfort locked horns against Anderson Silva inside the Octagon. Now, the former UFC stalwart wants the much awaited rematch with his former colleague but this time, in the squared circle.
Both Belfort and Silva, the two Brazilians who have been former UFC champions, faced each other on the main event of UFC 126 back on 5th February 2011 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, for Silva’s coveted Middleweight throne. “The Spider” registered a first round knockout win over Belfort, who later returned to the Light Heavyweight division.
Silva, who reigned as the UFC middleweight champion for eight years, bid the cage adieu in October last year and on 19th June, defeated former WBC middleweight boxing champion boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Jr via an eight round split decision win, marking the second victory of his three fight sparring career.
On the other hand, former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion, as well as Cage Rage World Light Heavyweight Champion Belfort, who retired from MMA in 2018, is on the talks to make his exhibition boxing debut against former six division boxing world champion Oscar De La Hoya on 11th September in Las Vegas.
Belfort wants to settle the scores with Silva in the squared circle
Now, Belfort is aiming to avenge his decade old loss to his compatriot as a pugilist, and while he is speculated to face Evander Holyfield after the De La Hoya fight, “The Phenom” is head over heels over the idea of a Silva rematch.
“I think (we’ll face each other in boxing),” Belfort spoke to Combate, “they say the rematch is something everyone likes. It’s not the dish we eat, it’s the dish you eat.”
My message (for Anderson) is: see you soon,” the 44-year-old added.
Belfort, was last seen in action against Lyoto Machida at UFC 224 in May 2018 and announced his retirement from mixed martial arts after the fight, but the next year it was announced that the Brazilian had signed up with ONE Championship, but parted ways with the promotion without a single fight.
Belfort has had only one boxing appearance so far, a pro bout against Josemario Neves on 11th April 2006, registering a first round KO at the Brazil Antonio Balbino Gymnasyum in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil.
Silva, on the other hand, made his boxing debut against Osmar Luiz Teixeira on 22nd May 1998 and suffered a defeat. However, he marked a win Julio Cesar de Jesus on 5th August 2005 and after a gap of sixteen years, returned to don the gloves once again to thrash Chavez Jr.
