In sports, it is not uncommon to see children following in their parents’ footsteps, and whenever the heir of a great athlete appears on the scene, all eyes are on him and the pressure of his surname.

For Thor, son of mixed martial arts legend Wanderlei Silva, the expectations were high as well. At 19 years of age, the young man debuted in the bantamweight category and marked his first career victory by knockout.

The fight, which took place last Sunday, at Arena da Baixada in Curitiba, was one of the highlights of Fight Music Show 2, which headlined Cris Cyborg’s boxing debut as well. Thor needed just two minutes to finish the fight and knock out rival Gabriel Bonfim.

In the first round, the young fighter amended a sequence of punches that destabilized the opponent and forced the referee to interrupt and end the fight. The remarkable debut puts Thor’s name among the most promising in the sport.

Thor Silva says he originally wanted to be a cop, but the fight game gained more importance

Born in the capital of Paraná, Thor spent most of his childhood in the United States, where, influenced by his father Wanderlei, he started practicing Jiu-Jitsu at the age of 5 and later Muay Thai at 8.

“My dad and I had a deal, I needed to get to black belt, not necessarily go pro, but he really wanted me to focus on getting there. I was still very young, I didn’t know if this was what I wanted to do. When we returned to Brazil, I decided to focus on the sport and I liked it more and more”, Thor said after the win.

At the age of 12, living in Brazil, Thor started training with André Dida, one of the great national names in Muay Thai, with experience in Japanese MMA events and in K-1, a respected Kickboxing organization. That’s when wrestling became more than a hobby and began to become a professional goal. “I even thought about being a police officer, but the fight ended up being louder,” he added. Currently, Thor trains at the CM System academy with master Cristiano Marcelo.

“Only parents know what it’s like. It’s a totally different feeling, but very emotional, because we know all the things that can happen in a fight,” Wanderlei, the former PRIDE champion, stated before Thor’s debut.

“I’ve been through it all and I know what your own effort is worth. He may be anyone’s son, have all the money available, but in a fight it’s your own effort that counts. The heart and the training. He’s been training hard and behaving like a professional,” the 46-year-old added. [H/T Bloody Elbow]
