This weekend at UFC on ESPN 6 which takes place at the TD Garden in Boston, featherweight Kyle Bochniak will be taking on Sean Woodson in the prelims card.

The 32-year old recently talked about the time that led to an overdose and coma. Kyle recently completed 10-years of being sober. Although he is fighting this weekend in the biggest Mixed Martial Arts organisation in the world, the journey to the top wasn’t easy for him. He got addicted and even served time in prison. He dropped out in the third year as a freshman and was constantly in and out of rehab.

Bochniak told MMA Junkie: “I was in and out of rehabs. I fell way behind in school and decided to drop out as a third-year freshman. All my friends were juniors and seniors at the time.

“So I ended up dropping out, not really having anything going for myself. I kind of just coasted that for about four or five years until I turned 22.”

He revealed that he discovered his deserted father in the prison cell next to him and this sparked something inside of him that made him completely change his lifestyle.

“I would get in trouble, I would drink, get in fights, I stole a couple of cars. I racked up a lot of charges and the judge just kind of wanted to give me a hard awakening, so he sent me to county jail with true criminals.

“Rock bottom was when I found myself in jail. My father was in the next block over, and I never really met him. I was two years old when he split.

“That was the closest I had been to him, in jail. That was rock bottom for me. I was like, ‘The apple really doesn’t fall far from the tree. I need to do something with my life here’.” Bochniak said.

Kyle Bochniak who is currently riding on a two-fight losing streak against Hakim Dawodu and Zabit Magomedsharipov gave a piece of golden advice to people who are struggling with addiction and how to overcome them.

“Don’t give up hope, even if you don’t know what the future looks like….put the right foot forward, make a little goal, whatever it is, go for a workout, apply for a job….have a glass of orange juice instead of having a beer…like just the next step…the little tiny goal that you accomplish will feel good…..Keep doing it, doing it, doing it….and before you know it…that’s the way I got through in 10 years”

“It wasn’t by…’ where am I going to be in 10 years?’, instead what am I going to do next minute, what am I going to do in the next hour, what can I do today to benefit tomorrow……so there is tomorrow….before you pick up anything play the tape, where will I be, when I do this. You don’t know if you’re gonna wake up tomorrow, you don’t know where you gonna be, who you have to apologise to, who you’re gonna run from and who’s looking to fight you and it’s not worth it. Put your right foot forward, make a little goal and accomplish it,” He concluded.
