Israel Adesanya is all set to challenge Kelvin Gastelum for the interim UFC middleweight championship at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta on 13th June. The fight will serve as a co-main event for Max Holloway vs Dustin Poirier.
However, the Kiwi Mixed Martial Artist has taken a verbal jab at the UFC middleweight champion from his neighbouring country Robert Whittaker. He said that Whittaker should have vacated his UFC title.
“If I was in his situation, ‘cool, take the belt’ because I know I’m going to get it back, that’s how confident I am. He’s [Whittaker] not that confident,” Adesanya said about Whittaker.
“I’m not needling him I’m jabbing him,” Adesanya said when he was asked during the open workouts.
“It’s not about him [Whittaker] right now it’s about Kelvin,” He concluded.
Whittaker has been prone to injuries and has pulled out of the fight on multiple occasions. He most recently pulled out of his UFC title fight against Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 234 in Rod Lavar Arena in Melbourne after the champion suffered from what was discovered to be an internal hernia and a collapsed bowel. He also pulled out of his fight against Luke Rockhold last year as well.
