History will be made as Puja Tomar, the first female fighter from India, steps into the Octagon for her UFC debut. Born in Muzaffarnagar, Tomar has overcome significant challenges to reach this milestone. Rayanne Amanda dos Santos will be Tomar’s opponent in the strawweight matchup.
Puja Tomar’s Journey to the UFC
Puja Tomar’s path to the UFC began when she was just 12 years old. After losing her father, she decided to learn martial arts to protect her family. Her journey led her from karate and kickboxing to Wushu, where she honed her skills. Little did she know that she would eventually become a trailblazer for Indian female fighters.
Puja Tomar stated “My mom has always been very excited for every one of my MMA fights, and one day she asked me which one is the biggest one,” said Tomar from her training camp in Bali. “I say, ‘Mama, UFC.’ So she said, ‘Puja, I want to be see you in UFC.’ I just say, ‘Yeah, mama, I train, and one day I’m going to UFC.’ And when I told her that now I’m in UFC, she was crying and she’s so excited and so happy.”
Here's the first look at Puja Tomar in the UFC fight kit. Puja is the first female Indian fighter in UFC history and makes her debut this weekend.

Tomar’s UFC debut is significant not only for her but also for her country. India hasn’t been a traditional hub for MMA, especially for women. While male fighters like Anshul Jubli, Bharat Kandare, and Arjan Singh Bhullar have represented India in the UFC, the ladies haven’t had their shot until now. Tomar’s arrival opens the door for other aspiring fighters back home.
