UFC President Dana White has shown interest in making the fight between two of the best UFC welterweights, Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal.
Dana White in the post-fight press conference after UFC 253 talked about potentially making a fight between former ‘friends turned enemies’ Colby Covington and Masvidal. A “BMF” rematch between champ Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz was on the table before Colby Covington’s amazing dominating win over Woodley.
UFC President Dana White indicated Covington became the priority after his win over ex-champ Tyron Woodley in the headliner of UFC Vegas 11.
“How do you not make that fight? That’s the fight that makes sense,” White said at the post-fight press conference for UFC 253. “The Nate Diaz rematch is going to be there no matter what happens.” White clarified that the new matchup wasn’t the result of any negotiations that went south with Diaz. He added, “I don’t even know if we talked to Nate yet.”
Diaz has been inactive since his fight for the “BMF” title against Masvidal at UFC 244. Masvidal won the fight when the cage side doctor refused to allow Diaz to continue due to damage sustained in the fight. The two immediately agreed to a rematch, but the opportunity didn’t materialize until earlier this year.
Both Colby and Jorge have been competing for potential rematches with reigning division titleholder Kamaru Usman, but Dana White assured fans that despite Covington’s impressive victory over Woodley earlier this month, Gilbert Burns would still be receiving the next title shot.
Masvidal vs Covington is the fight to make
Covington and Masvidal’s relationship took a turn for the worst after an altercation at American Top Team gym, as well as Masvidal claiming that Covington did not pay the two fighters’ former trainer Paulino Hernandez for a long time. This resulted in Masvidal cutting ties with his former roommate and training partner. There’s a lot of history between these two fighters. They both went from being roommates to wanting to smash each other’s faces.
With the next shot at Kamaru Usman’s 170-pound title going to Gilbert Burns, Covington said he has a good fight in mind to occupy his time, and that’s another former teammate in Jorge Masvidal. After Covington won at UFC Vegas 11 he called out Masvidal in the post-fight conference.
“Where’s Jorge Masvidal at?” Colby Covington told reporters, at the UFC on ESPN+ 36 post-fight news conference. “He needs to come to see me for all the talking he’s done. Come see if can walk the walk. I talk the talk and I walk the walk. I want to see Jorge Masvidal in that octagon. … I want the best friends turned enemy to fight with ‘Street Judas’ Jorge Masvidal.
“He’s been talking all that talk wreckless. At our old gym, he was saying, ‘I’m going to beat your ass, I’m going to do this, I’m going to do that.’ OK, let’s see it. Come see me in the Octagon, then. If you’re so tough let’s see you back up those words. But he can’t. He’s going to go hiding. He’s going to look for that Soy Boy out of Californa Nate Diaz. He’s going to look for easy fights because he knows I’ll expose him just like I did Tyron Woodley tonight.”
While Masvidal has yet to react to Colby’s performance or post-fight statements from UFC Vegas 11, he has said in the past that he would like to get his fists on Covington. The entire MMA world is now waiting for UFC to finally get this fight done.
