Zhang Weili is all up for a trilogy saga against Rose Namajunas but has put up one condition for her rival before they can cross paths for the third time.
‘Magnum’ regained her UFC Women’s Strawweight throne after defeating Carla Esparza at UFC 281 last month, earning her way into the title shot by defeating Joanna Jędrzejczyk earlier this year.
Her first reign as the 115-pound champion was terminated by ‘Thug’ Rose at UFC 261 last year, and Weili suffered another loss to Namajunas in the rematch at UFC 268 in November 2021.
This time, however, is appearing to be more competent, as she targets the top hierarchy at 115- including a third encounter with Namajunas. All that being said, Weili says her rival needs to mark one win before a trilogy is in place.
“Maybe not immediately, the next title defense, but we’ll run into each other down the road,” said Weili on The MMA Hour.
Following her back to back wins over Weili, Namajunas lost her title to Esparza at UFC 274 in May this year, marking her first loss in three years. While there’s no question in her capabilities, Weili mentions that just one victory will ensure that she and Namajunas lock horns in the Octagon once again.
“Yes, she needs to win one to get her confidence back,” Weili reponded when asked about Namajunas earning another shot at the strawweight title.
While Weili is ready for a Namajunas trilogy if her specific requirement is met, there are more cards on the table for the 115-pound champ. One is Jéssica Andrade, whom the Chinese fighter defeated back in May to clinch the title for the first time.
Namajunas, on the other hand, decided to take a break from the fight game following the Esparza loss, focusing on modeling work, as well as a new documentary on her. However back in August, she did hint about making a potential jump to 125 to take on Valentina Shevchenko.
