Marlon Vera continues his weaponry of words towards Sean Strickland, going after his hair in his latest dig at the reigning UFC bantamweight champion.
Apart from his flamboyant fighting style and trash talking persona, one characteristic of “Sugar” that stands out from the rest of the UFC roster is his creative and unique hairstyles- a recent instance was the pink and blue coloured cornrows that O’Malley displayed in the main event of UFC 299 against Vera.
And it is the same area where “Chito” has found the scope to dig at his longtime rival. Taking to X (formerly Twitter) late Wednesday, Vera lambasted O’Malley over his choice of hairstyles.
“Who braid your hair @SugaSeanMMA you where grease to the bone I wonder how much gel they use ?” Vera wrote.

Sean O’Malley himself had a witty response, hitting back at Vera, asking him to send a photo of his face.

Fans dig back at Marlon Vera
While Marlon Vera found a scope to disparage O’Malley over his hair, the fans, however, had something else in mind. As soon as Vera’s tweet went viral, fight fans stormed his comments to rebuff him over his performance against O’Malley at UFC 299.
One fan wrote, “I remember that time I had grease in my hair. I landed over 200 significant strikes because of it. Greasy hair is basically anabolic steroids.”

“Yeah I’m sure the grease in his hair is what caused him to land 250 of 350 significant strikes and had nothing to do with you having the defense of a punching bag.” wrote another fan.

The O’Malley-Vera saga
Sean O’Malley and Marlon Vera first squared off at UFC 252 back in August 2020. The fight delivered fireworks. O’Malley showcased his flashy striking, but Vera’s leg kicks disrupted his rhythm. In a shocking turn of events, O’Malley suffered from drop foot due to Vera’s precise kicks. The Ecuadorian fighter seized the opportunity, securing a first-round stoppage and declaring, “Welcome to the Chito Show.”
The long-awaited rematch took almost four years in the making- the main event of UFC 299 on 9th March 2024. O’Malley, now the reigning UFC Bantamweight champion, had his first title defense to make- against a fighter whom he needed to avenge the loss from the past. This time, it was an utter show of dominance from O’Malley, as he unanimously defeated Vera (50-45, 50-45, 50-44) to mark his first 135-pound title defense.
